We all have our strengths in life.
Some people were born with athletic skill. Fit, energetic, competitive with a passion for the game.
Some people were born with a passion for science, mathematics and the world as a vast organism, living and breathing at this very moment.
As for me, over this last year and a half I have been discovering what my strengths are.
Turns out I always had them, I just didn't know.
Changing my degree at university from International Studies to Journalism and Creative Writing and Communication was the best thing I could have ever done. It opened my mind to the world that I was already a part of.
I have always had a passion for writing. I still have every single notebook and diary I have ever owned. I have been writing poetry since I was 8.
When I decided this degree I am in now was the right one for me, I found myself immediately consumed with the thoughts of trying to do everything. I started reading more books, I created this blog and as soon as uni started, I was the happiest I have ever been in an educational institution. Now that's saying a lot, especially because on a whole I have always loved school and learning. Haha.
Now I'm at the point where I'm discovering other things related to writing that I know I could do. Things that I am good at and that I love. At the moment I am involved in a local theatre group where I will eventually get the opportunity to bring to life a script I am to write all by myself. So far there, I'm in the ideas stage. Constantly writing down what ever comes to my head.
I'm also making a promotional clip for the Melodrama group in one of my classes at uni. In a way I'm introducing myself to simple film production processes. It was only a couple of hours ago that I was just sitting outside in the sunshine, peace and quiet, working on the storyboard.
Oh and another thing I've discovered that was always there is based on creativity. I have always been creative - for as long as I can remember. What I do is think of anything and everything I could possibly do to build a portfolio and my experience and I just know I can do it?
Why?
It's that notion of creativity. The notion of always having ideas in your mind about what you can do to build on something or construct it from scratch. Knowing that my mind automatically does that in any situation rules out fear of failure or the idea of it being impossible.
This brings me up to date to right now. Tonight I'm going to the launch for the SA Writers Centre Poetry Slam Wildcard Heat. I'm a bit excited. See, as I said earlier, I have been writing poetry for years. As a kid I wanted to be a poet when I grew up. But I soon learned that as a writer you either have to be multi-talented or REALLY REALLY GOOD at what you do. Anyway, I always wanted to know how I could use my passion for writing, language, words and poetry. After discovering George Watsky, I worked it out. I'll get into slam poetry!
So, we'll see how tonight goes. I'll check it out and see if I can hack it, then next year I might be back but as a performer!
Looking back at the whole year, I'm not suprised at all that this is where I've ended up.
I'm extremely glad that I've worked out that this is the direction I want to go in and even more so that I've realised that this - all this stuff that I do, is one of my very own strengths.
