So, here's a little bit of history for you, readers.
Let me just preface this post with informing you how much I love history.
Discovering the origin of something, the deeper meanings, the reasons why we are who we are today just makes me so enthralled.
Today, I have been doing some research for a group presentation for a Journalism class. I was lucky enough to be given the topic I wanted - country and suburban newspapers. Basically, I wanted it because I have a lot to do with my local country paper, The Bunyip in Gawler, South Australia. As a reader and contributor, I was excited to be able to have the chance to present on something I already knew a little about. I was even luckier when I was given the topic of 'history, circulation and ownership'. I love history. So not only was I able to do research on a topic I had a little background knowledge on, I got the opportunity to research its history. Oh wow, how happy that makes me.
Nevertheless, the history of the Gawler Bunyip is absolutely fascinating. Why they established the group, how, by who, and so on. I feel such a part of my community when I am involved in it, but even more so when I learn about its history. It's my home and I feel I am just as much a part of its heritage as it is with me.
Thing is though, I wasn't born in Gawler. Nor were my family ancestors of this area. I was born in the Modbury Hospital, and lived in Manningham for 10 years. That was my life. But, it wasn't my home. My home is now, and has been for 10 years, Gawler, Lewiston, Two Wells. I am a part of their communities.
So here I am, calling Gawler my home - even though there are those whose claims would surpass mine by hundreds of years.
One day, I do hope to have left a lasting impression on my communities; enough so that I become a strong part of its history. Perhaps I will rewrite the history books (and I mean that in the most literal of senses), or perhaps I will in fact be the history.
Who knows.
